It is one of the most important attractions of the island. Its history stretches back to the 8th century BC due to the island's strategic position between the Venetian and Ottoman Empires. The Old and New Fortresses are some of the most impressive archaeological sites that mark the edges of the town. They were used for four centuries as an administrative center of the Venetian maritime trade in the eastern Mediterranean and consisted a stronghold against the pressure of the Ottoman territorial expansion. There were several alterations in the plan of the forts in the course of time, with the most recent modifications taking place in the 19th century under the British rule.
