Corfu is the northern island and second largest of the Ionian Sea. It is characterized as a cosmopolitan and multicultural place with strong Venetian, English and French influences. The golden beaches that extend along the west coast and the green landscapes that occupy the central countryside of the island are characteristics of its natural beauty. With a wealth of heritage, culture, attractions and night life, Corfu is an ideal destination all year round. The Old Town of Corfu Old Town is the name given to the historic center of Corfu. It is one of the most important attractions of the island. Its history stretches back to the 8th century BC due to the island's strategic position between the Venetian and Ottoman Empires. The Old and New Fortresses are some of the most impressive archaeological sites that mark the edges of the town. They were used for four centuries as an administrative center of the Venetian maritime trade in the eastern Mediterranean and consisted a stronghold against the pressure of the Ottoman territorial expansion. There were several alterations in the plan of the forts in the course of time, with the most recent modifications taking place in the 19th century under the British rule. The plan of the town and design of housing stock date mainly to the Venetian period with several reconstructions in the 19th century.
Kitesurf in Corfu There are several spots for kitesurfing in Corfu such as Agios Georgios Argiradon, Halikounas, Issos, Marathias, Agios Stefanos North. Kitesurf renting stuff and kitesurf school are only available in Halikounas and Issos.
'Jazz Now! New Music from Ionian University Jazz Program' was published by Jazz&Tzaz Magazine in November 2011 (Issue No 224) and produced by the Associate Professor Dimos Dimitriadis, Lecturer Gorge Kontrafouris in collaboration with Jazz&Tzaz Magazine. It contains original jazz songs from 13 students and alumni of the Ionian University. Many of the musicians who contributed in the recording of the CD have extended their training and education in the United States with prestigious scholarships from the Fulbright and Onassis foundations. The CD contains songs of five new recording projects; three of the projects come directly from alumni and feature debut songs of the young jazz musicians, while the other two projects were produced by the Faculty of Music of the Ionian University.
